BANGKOK – The Chula Clinical Research Center (CRC) is proud to announce that the research paper, "PiggyBac Transposon-Mediated CD19 CAR T-cell Therapy in Refractory Systemic Lupus Erythematosus," led by Wonngarm Kittanamongkolchai, MD, Asisstant Director of the Chula Clinical Research Center, and her team, has been selected for a "Top 4 Posters Oral Presentation" at the 14th Annual Meeting of the Lupus Academy. The prestigious event will be held from October 9-11, 2025, in Berlin, Germany.
This research, a project conducted entirely under the Chula Clinical Research Center (CRC), is a Phase I study evaluating the safety and preliminary efficacy of a novel treatment for refractory Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE). The therapy utilizes CAR T-cells created with the PiggyBac transposon technique, a virus-free method that is cost-efficient and poses a low risk of immunogenicity.
The study has yielded highly promising results. The treatment was found to be safe, with no observed cytokine release syndrome or neurotoxicity. Remarkably, one patient achieved a complete, drug-free remission, with the resolution of renal inflammation confirmed by biopsy and sustained B-cell aplasia throughout the 15-month follow-up period. These findings highlight the therapy's potential and may inform future strategies to optimize PB CAR-T cell production and dosing for autoimmune diseases.
This selection for a top oral presentation underscores the quality of research conducted by the CRC team and its collaboration with faculty from Chulalongkorn University and Nagoya University. It is a significant step forward in the mission to develop innovative treatments and improve the quality of life for patients worldwide.
